Green’s Windmill is a lovely, low-cost day out for curious kids. In the science centre, little scientists can experiment with light, electricity and magnetism, and discover the story of George Green, the self-taught genius whose ideas are still used today.

Outside, the award-winning community garden is a peaceful spot to wander, with veg beds, a wildlife pond, a Victorian-style greenhouse and a lawn area. Pop into the shop afterwards for a bag of the mill’s organic flour or a souvenir.

Good to Know

  • Windmill repairs: Repairs began on 3 November 2025. During the works there is no public access to the windmill building, but the science centre and garden stay open.

  • Parking: Free for two hours in the Windmill Lane car park. You must register on arrival using the RingGo app or the number on the parking sign.

  • Disabled parking: Available in the mill yard via Belvoir Hill. Call ahead to arrange it.

  • Getting there: About a 15-minute walk from the city centre and railway station. The number 43 bus from King Street passes Windmill Lane.

  • Accessibility: The whole science centre and the ground floor of the windmill are wheelchair accessible, as are the toilets. Calling ahead for mill yard parking avoids the short flight of steps from the car park.

  • Events: The mill runs a year-round programme of events, so check its events page before you go.
